There was one LMFF show (out of the two that I went to hahaha) in particular that made me feel rather depressed about fashion (more on that some other time). This is a sketch of the one that didn't- YEN Offsite Runway (featuring Alexi Freeman, Leonard street, Jolet, Livia Arena, One Fell Swoop and Metias). Guests sat on upturned buckets while models walked around an art centerpiece in a figure 8. There were some standout pieces from Jolet and One Fell Swoop but I think I was paying more attention to Rachel Rutt than the clothes... The bucket seating was also pretty dangerous- a lady in front of us misjudged and fell onto her butt (simultaneously launching a glass of red wine into the air) when trying to sit down.

Unfortunately all the posts I had lined up have now been posted and I really must get around to the rest of my holiday homework. School resumes next Monday but I still have so many things to do, including location scouting, planning shoots for Pocketto (AHHH SO MANY THINGS I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT BUT YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT) and some HARDCORE STUDYING. I love Saigon so much. I can't believe it took me 4 freaking trips to the place to realise how great it is. The first time I visited was when I was ~5, then again when I was ~12, then at ~15 and now at 17. My goodness I must have been an unappreciative hormonal ass hole (also known as a teenager) up until this year. Oops, guess I'm still technically a teen but with only 2 years til this teen dream is over I think maturity is creeping in. Guidebooks and travel blogs always mention something about being overwhelmed by the immense smells, traffic and constant noise, whether that be from construction or...overzealous beeping on the roads. I never got that. Beeping? Meh, it wasn't that "ball breaking" as people make it out to be. I never experienced that punch in the face from the sensory overload. In fact, I never got sensory overload. I'm going to thank Saturdays spent in the storage rooms of asian groceries for that. The only thing that hit me was the humidity. And even that lasted only briefly. Saigon is pretty wonderful at all times of day. I remember hating the crowd and traffic and the guilt that hit when people living in poverty thrust lottery tickets at you. But this time around I learnt how to cross a road without having a freak out mid way (just walk- motorists dodge you) and well, I still feel guilty about the beggars. I think what struck me most about Vietnam this time is how different each region is. Going to quiet cities like DaNang and Hue (where people shut up shop and go home at 8:30pm and where disparity rates are supposedly much lower compared to Saigon and Hanoi) made me realise that the rush of the big city is unparalleled. Whether it's walking down the most westernized street in town - Dong Khoi (hiii Gucci, Gloria Jeans, indie cafe. Um what are you doing here?) - or accidentally ending up in the red light district while dining with family (um say hello to the rows of girls sitting outside 'massage' parlours), every street is an adventure. Saigon is the glitziest city in the whole of Vietnam- locals say it has just about everything everything and it really does; if you look hard enough. I'm making plans to go back when I'm older. The darn city changes so much every year I get excited about what it's going to be like in the future. You can feel change coming through just standing in that place.

THIS IS A DELAYED NEW YEARS EVE STORY

Watching the fireworks in Saigon on New Years Eve was hilarious. It was just my cousin Vi and I standing amonst the hundreds of other Vietnamese by the banks of the river.

Just about every single road within a 400m radius of the prime viewing spot (by the river) was clogged up. Traffic had ground to a halt, simply because there was no space for traffic to move on account of all the parked motorbikes which people sat on to view the fireworks. I guess you can't expect anything more when a million people race for a parking space along a 200m stretch of road. Just picture a 400 square metre mosh pit with each person on a motor bike.

The block behind the river (where our hotel was) had virtually no view of the fireworks- the line of riverside hotels obscured the view- yet people still gazed up at the sky, lovers and family cradled in eachothers arms, waiting to see nothing but content with hearing the boom of the show.

Ok I may have over romanticized that a little. A LEETLE. But it's a true story man.

We were standing by the river, right in the thick of it. We had somehow maneuvered through all the parked bikes and found little pockets of space to fill. It was hella crowded and personal space was nonexistent but somehow it was very civilized; no pushing or (outwardly) drunk hooligans in sight.

Then came the fireworks.

Vietnamese are funny. The fireworks were rather sporadic and weren't timed or really coordinated in regards to colour/size so there was a lot of confusion as to when the show would actually end. It went on for around 20 minutes at least and all throughout that time, people kept saying "Oh ok, it's over, let's go home" during the varied intervals between explosions.

But then the next batch would be fired up and then they'd pause and just stare in awe before repeating the same process. When the fireworks finally did end, people didn't know whether to stay or go due to there being no "finale" so everybody just stood there for a few minutes anticipating the next explosion. You know that feeling when everybody in the crowd is thinking/feeling/seeing/hearing the exact same thing? Yeah, I like that feeling.

When it didn't come, the crowd just ended up weaving around eachother and everybody got out of the mosh pit. Everybody was so excited and in high spirits (although maybe not as overjoyed as when the national soccer team wins a match).

I think it was the first year that Saigon put on a fireworks show for NYE. They also had a giant stage sponsored by Heineken with some international DJ, some ear achingly bad Australian singer and a giant clock.

Vietnamese crowds are so awkward with English music. They generally don't know how to react.
The DJ was all "yeah! Pump it! Sing along! I love you Saigon!" but the crowd was just completely non responsive. When Vietpop/Viet ballads/Hotel California is blasted though, it's a completely different story.

Saigon seems to be constantly moving towards Western culture/standards...well at least it's trying to project itself as so.

As you are all probably aware of by now, I have a habit. A magazine habit.

I guess it doesn't help that more and more niche magazines keep popping up.

SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. WHICH ONES ARE WORTH THE PENNIES? ~~this one~~.

When I was in Saigon, my cousins and I found a cute bookstore selling old junk left from the French rule. The back of the store was pretty much a mountain of junk (literally racks and tables with nearly toppling piles of papers). I did bring back some quirky things like postcards and pictures of half naked people (ho ho ho, I won't elaborate) though. And because the store doubled as a newsagent: a July edition of German VOGUE. I understood none of it of course, but on a whole, it wasn't anything special.

I am also holding SO-EN, which I asked my brother to get me when he did his Asia trip late last year. He brought me back 2 different issues which made me squeal quite loudly. If you haven't seen SO-EN, you should really track down a copy. I love it to death.

The copy of RUSSH is the first I've received from the subscription I was gifted. I haven't read it all yet but it's beautiful so far (as always).

I snapped up INDUSTRIE as soon as I saw it in MagNation. Everybody was raving about the first issue which I missed out on so I wasn't going to take any chances. I'm about halfway through and it's probably the most fulfilling/satisfying/goddamn amazing magazine that I've ever touched (sorry POP) and the article to fashion editorial to advertising ratio is perfect (haha, it's important to me ok?). Not to mention that the articles are well written, the interviews incredibly insightful and Marc Jacobs looks like a super coiffed and well mannered pirate in his feature. You should buy it based on the last reason alone.

Last is WHAT SHALL I WEAR TODAY?, the book penned by the most stylish bunny on the interwebz- Fifi Lapin. The book features Fifi's fashion advice, outfits as well as interviews with some of the best talents in British fashion. It was a gift from Likkle Girly Poo who knows how much I love cute fashion illustration. Thank youuuuuu Likkle Girl!

The other day I thrifted this amazing fringed blazer. The shoulder width is way too large for me but I bought it anyway, figuring I might use it on a shoot one day. Well actually that's a lie. I bought it because it instantly reminded me of the fringe and feather action going on in MBLAQ's MV for Oh Yeah (now an oldy but still a goody). So yes, to answer your question, I am still a big fucking KPOP fangirl.

I have a horribly annoying habit of bursting into song mid conversation. The trigger for this often lies in one word. Take for example the conversations I have with my cousin. I think I may have infected her with this habit too because a simple story could take twice as long for her to tell due to all our melodic interjections. Here is a fictitious example:"Somebody-"

"Told me, that you had a boyfriend, who looks like a girlfriend..."

"-kept calling me-"

"Stop calling me, calling me, please stop stalkin' me, stalkin' me".

Most of the time the retelling of the story goes down the drain and we just end up riffing to some bad early noughties song (which more or less shaped our childhood)/ K-pop raps / Ke$ha (ain't we clar-see?).

When I got an email from Alek of Indonesian label All The Things I've Done, my eyes had barely scanned past the subject header before there was a dance party going on in my head, courtesy of Russian 'faux lesbian' band t.A.T.u. Remember their song "All The Things She Said"? Yep, my brain was intent on hitting replay on that one. Funny how a fashion label with a name vaguely similar to a song title can trigger an all out youtubing session and 'where are they now' google searching.

When I finally take a look at the contents of the email, I found a video that very much appealed to my tastes. Almost every fashion label seems to be dabbling in some sort of fashion video and while All The Things I've Done's FW/11 video is not a glossed up 5 minute feature of a wandering model making love to the camera, it's lo fi behind the scenes snippet captures the collection's nomadic essence. The clothing instantly brought to mind the Mori girl aesthetic, a Japanese subculture translating to 'forest' girl. If you want to know more, Mori Girl is a good start. If you're really keen you can even learn how to be a Mori Girl (in only 9 steps!).

Mori girl vibes aside, the 3 year old label focuses on putting an interesting spin on basics. While guys get treated to an array of matching blazers and pants, something of a mix between preppy and safari, girls get butterfly sleeved blouses and quirky jackets. Among my favourites are the pleated collar jacket (a fresh take on a traditional Indonesian item) and the fringed dress. I'm such a sucker for anything dreamy/nomadic. Here's hoping for a webshop (and modest prices) to pop up soon.

There is always a steady stream of talent pouring out from Aus/Nz designers. Seeing such talent mostly makes me sob tears into my wallet which later turns to wet cloth once RAFW rolls around. By then, I am usually clenching my fists with my eyes closed and wishing really hard for an Alice Euphemia sale to pop up. But those darn sales always come around at the wrong time. Oh Cotton On, how I resent your $10 sales! And thus I am yet to own any magnifico pieces from local labels. But 2011 will be a serious year. I will save my pennies to finally buy something I will love forever. Something that will fill my heart with joy each time I look at it.*

I am seriously going to save up for Salasai. I am getting underlying satan worshipper vibes from their clothes, not only from the creepy staring going on in the lookbook but the two faced skirts as well. Oh lordy, this New Zealand label is really going for the heart strings. Their A/W 11 collection Sacrificial Grace mixes two faced pieces (so you can be all 'fairy dust innocent one moment then cauldren stirring wench the next) with a smattering of unisex (not that that affects me as I have no considerable other half to care for) and walks the trademark NZ tightrope-simple & clean and a touch avant garde. Basically in plain old internet terms, GET THIS ON ME NOW. OMNOMNOMNOMNOM.

This talk of saving up for amazing local labels just reminded me of ffiXXed. Actually they're now working and doing production in Shenzhen but they're originally from Aus so... OH WHATEVER they're amazing and a post about them is long overdue.

But now, lap up some Salasai.

Maybe I spoke too soon about all my Holga photos being shit. I like these 2 shots very very much. Maybe because they are the only ones which didn't turn out being completely black and or bleached to the point of no return by light leaks. My heart actually hurts when I look at a roll and see blanks. It's like learning that your memory has just been erased. PAIN STAKING STUFF. I believe my initial thoughts upon seeing this roll was "FUCKKKKK I'M SUCH AN INCOMPETENT AS:DKJA:SLKFJLKJGRARGASFGH". But then that internet meme featuring a panda and the caption that says "calm the fuck down" popped up into my head and life was good again. I do like the whole Holga concept though- "there are no rules", "shoot from the hip" etc. -so I'll keep persisting and see where this expensive habit leads me.

Hope you guys had a great Christmas!!! I apologise for the absence of posts. I should probably tell you that blogging is put on the backburner when you:
a) don’t have decent wifi (or are just too stingy to pay 20c per minute for it)
b) are holidaying in Vietnam
c) are eating Vietnamese food

I’m currently sitting at the pool, milking the executive floors wifi, sweating from my scalp to my fingertips all over the keyboard. Oh to labour for your love.

Well first up, I want to thank everyone who reads, comments, visits, saves pictures from (haha kinda pushing it, I know) this blog. Thank you so so much! And all you guys who support Pocketto, thank you so much too! Aimee and I have been working hard this year to release the first print issue of Pocketto in 2011. I’d say we’re currently at the 600m mark in this 800m race. Still more work to be done though! And quite the number of hurdles to jump too...

While I’m at this, you should check out our site and our blog. As co editor, I reserve the right to tell you to do so in every second post. ALSO stay tuned for our special pre print online edition!
And lastly I should also mention that we’d appreciate ANY donation to the Pocketto Print Issue fund. To cap off, here’s some pictures from zee Vietnam trip so far (among the few that muh Canon didn’t overexpose/ruin). Yeah, my Canon SLR broke (some sticky shutter problem) so I overexposed 60% of my pictures (GUH WHY BE SO HIPSTER FOR, EMMA). Worst of all, it took me 2 rolls of film before I figured out the problem. Good thing Vietnam develops film so cheaply. I mean WOW, $5.00 for 2 rolls developed and scanned onto a CD. Sighs. I’m currently using Aimee’s HOLGA instead of the Canon. I hear she’s a hardy German chick who never lets you down.

I have a stupid feeling that 2011 won’t trump 2010, especially with the impending strain of *insert Jaws theme* :year 12. 2010 has been an amazing year. Truly so. Thank you all for being a part of it and if I don’t “see” you on New Years eve/day, I hope you have a great one.

I tore through the plastic of Purple magazine while in Borders. Actually I got my cousin to do that. Does that make us Book Store Pest species #28- The Cheap Asshole who tries but doesn't buy -? Why yes, I think that does. But shut up Borders, I support you by buying loads of other titles when I should instead be supporting dedicated cutiepie Magnation.
That was my conscience debating itself.
Moving on.

Maybe if Jooey Tribbiani actually existed he could have taught me how to look at porn without taking off the plastic. I'm sure that's essentially what I would be doing with Purple anyway. Ok I shouldn't be so quick to write off Purple as ~~semi~~ porn. But I couldn't, as much as I love magazines, justify paying $60 for a magazine I've never read filled with Terry Richardson photos of fashion girls showing their tits. Why do people find Purple so utterly charming and edgy, I thought as I flicked through. Because it's French? And voyeuristic? Because it's editor Olivier Zahm embodies that 'rock n roll'/voyeur kinda lifestyle?

I'll be frank. I didn't have time to read all the content. Which I would have liked to do, just to get what all the fuss is about. From the things I did read, a lot of stuff went over my head. Life experience and getting cultured should fix that. What I liked were the extended interviews with biggies in the fashion design bubble. What I didn't like, and this is what I predominantly saw while flipping through, were the girls in fuck me positions, wearing I don't know, a $2000 stiletto by YSL. Got nothin against the stiletto or the nudity even, but don't call yourself a fucking fashion magazine when all your shoots are a giant orgy featuring the latest YSL heel next to Eniko Mihalik's well trimmed forest.

Wait, so maybe that's the only problem I have with this magazine. The fact that it calls itself Purple FASHION and features little fashion. Explain to me what the fuss is about. Maybe then I'll buy it. Don't just tell me it has 'personality' and is 'subversive'. Explain why I shouldn't just refer to it as the Zahm x Richardson wet dream. Or 'classy ZOO magazine: UNCENSORED'. Also porn is totally mainstream now (not really, I just make these kinds of claims after watching bondage/S&M splices from Gaga and 30 seconds to Mars)- but there's going to be a 'nun' movement or something isn't there (haha)? Considering how desensitized we will become towards nudity. Or fashion may go through a penis phase (the boob/vag to penis ratio was something like 9:1 in the issue of Purple I flipped through) . Or will people never be bored by boobs? Maybe Purple will be forced to find another edge in the future. I don't know, just putting it out there.

RMIT student showcase

Saw some amazing designs at the RMIT student design showcase at GPO... 2 weeks ago? Something like that. Julie and I went on an epic adventure that day. I think it involved Camberwell market, japanese food and some other fashioney stuff which I can barely remember because it was so long ago. The only thing I did during Melbourne Spring Fashion Week was attend the Miss Lyndel Yeo parade (pictures below) and the book ‘Fashion: Designers of Australia & New Zealand’ 's launch at the Life With Bird store. Both nights were shared with my buddy in "be cool, we totally belong here" -Julie. I should have gone to other shows or been productive and volunteered for backstage in the main shows like dedicated Jules did but erm, I'm a ~~hard working student~~ lazy butt.

The phrase has become a reflex. 5 easy words and I don't have to worry about googling "melbourne cafes", rushing to whereis.com.au or noting down addresses. No one objects to the invitation. All the 'cool' people know where the pound is; they know of it's 'cool' cred, it's history -"Oh so this is where St. Jeromes moved to?" (St. Jeromes? What the fuck? Just nod and smile.). I can go to the counter and ask for one of two caffeine laden beverages I am familiar with, sit down and for the next 2hrs feel right at home talking to a person much much cooler than myself.
I really couldn't give a rats about coffee- I wouldn't know good coffee if it stormed up my nostrils and shoved it's grinds into my bloodstream. But I like £1000 Bend and sinking into a hollow bottomed chair and drinking chai tea and talking about shit till it gets dark and all the wifi milkers head home. I miss brainstorming with A-dawg there but till she returns from her epic adventure, I'll be content with meeting rather fabulous (and I say that in the most exaggerated Vogue editor's voice) people there.

Side note: French people or people that have been to France have the most amazing taste in shoes.

My essay writing skills have plummeted since I left to blog in limbo to focus on schoolwork. How ironic. I think there must be something quite beneficial about writing on the spot daily; even if it is mainly just fangirling over Anna Plunkett or something. In any case, I'll try to get back to my regular posting schedule (what's that? I promised that last time? And the time before last?). We'll see how it goes. Hopefully my writing gets back into shape...haha. If not, I'd have still had a grandiose time rambling on about Anna Plunkett on this blog. But also, releasing narcissism via the internet is wildly satisfying.
You know what else is satisfying? Correction. What WOULD be satisfying? Running my hands down this Christopher Esber skirt which I flailed over following RAFW. It's featured in the current issue of Vogue which I halfarsedly flipped through at the supermarket but really should have bought. It's the first editorial in Vogue Australia I've LOVED since...that Gemma Ward issue of Dec 05(?). Of course it stars the only covergirl Vogue Aus thinks it can bank on: Miss Catherine "I only have one face but fuck I'm still hot" McNeil. Anyway, creepers plus anything high fashion obviously rules. Also shooting on location and executing the 50s theme amazingly well earns this shoot 10 gold stars. The neck ties and swinging skirts remind me of the Grease costumes and heavy make up my mother made caked onto me as a kid for a dance concert. Mhm, I was one of those dance kids- permed wig and all.

Also, we realised our shoots are always filled with asians (aside from models and MUAs on the odd occasion)- why don't our non asian friends offer to assist? It makes us feel racist and/or like a unit of asian exchange students...or a dance crew that should be named Fobamatic.

Aimee took this photo with her now murdered camera (may it rest it peace) on a horrifyingly cold night. It wasn't so horrifying for me as I was in around 5 layers plus a near face engulfing scarf. And as the weather has been showing no signs of diverting from its torturous course lately, I haven't been wearing much else aside from what's in this picture. Oh, except for ugg boots. But only indoors...where I feel at ease walking on little toasty cloud puffs. I may work up the balls to wear them outside one day but I'd probably have to morph into Tavuchi from Spank first, or some other equally hip Tokyo-ite.

Time won't let me blog. But I have been relatively productive away from the blog so yay (again). But still...bleurgh. I really want to go back to writing here. I miss it.

Anyway, quick quick! Before I go to school, here are some updates:

The super amazing Maie from Maiden came down from Sydney for the weekend and we managed to squeeze in a shoot. Maie hand makes EVERYTHING and when we found out the prices she sells her stuff for, I'm pretty sure we all thought she was a one woman sweatshop. Support her, my minions! You can check out some pictures from the shoot on Aimee's blog which she will surely let trickle into her posts.
In the mean time, here's a shitty picture of Chervil's legs in shiny Limedrop pants from the same shoot.

Aimee and I also met up with Rach from the sunny sunshine state. Pictures to follow next week, when I pick up the CD scans. I seriously have not been able to use digital in months (aside from my phone camera of course). The DSLR is great, but my 50mm lens is shitty on a camera that is not full frame. I literally have to run 10 metres away from my subject to fit them into the frame. And also, the analogue cam seems to be best friends with my 50mm lens. And well, the camera wants what it wants.

Lately I've felt comforted by "6 degrees of separation". If the theory is true, which I have found it has been to me lately, then I instantly have something in common with any stranger, which is a nice feeling to have when trying to make a good first impression.
I've also been trying to figure out how I am connected to everybody in this world- a decent thing to investigate via facebook mutual friends if you have too much time on your hands. I kid. I have better things to do with my time...

I guess J is a secret "salmon" colour wearer. I don't know why he was all ashamed about wearing pink; it didn't make him look any less of "a man" if that's what he was worried about. Although I do have to say, pink can sometimes look pretty awful on a guy. Especially if it is in the form of a shirt with the collar flipped up and paired with a fedora. *Shudders*

Tiger

The opening scene of Tiger drops you in the heart of Tokyo. The voice of a girl articulates in French her jumbled emotions as the camera tracks a busy multi story Tokyo expressway from behind spangled branches.

Quiet and lonely Renee, played by the ethereal (as well as frikkin stunning) Rachel Blais, is a Québécoise model on a working contract during the winter season in Tokyo. Jack, played by writer director James McFay (equally easy on the eyes), is fresh from film school in Australia and is in Tokyo for the first time on the instructions of his agency, despite not having modelled in years. Both characters careers and lives are in limbo as they spend each day in glitzy Omotesando, unable to book jobs. They are like minded, both fish out of water, tired of their unsuccessful modelling stints and eager to take each moment as it comes. They meet in a shared modelling unit and instantly find comfort in one another.

The relationship between the pair is intimate, sweet, unglossed and completely believable. I can't help but think they are a real life couple... The dialogue between them isn't that of a witty American film with firey comebacks...it's real: lame jokes, light humour, sillyness and all. They'd probably remind you of X and Y in your own life.

Both characters are caught in the modelling vortex yet neither are doing what they want with their lives. So they make the most of their time in wonderfully wonderous (sorry, bias coming in here) Tokyo, touring it from head to toe. Both vowe to escape and pursue their dreams (him, writing a film, her, going to uni) once their contracts end but soon after Renee's career begins to take off, the relationship heads for turmoil.

Upon an earlier loved up trip to Ueno Zoo, the pair stop to admire a tiger. The symbolism of the magnificent caged animal is intrinsic to the film (hey, at least I think so). The tiger represents the flame within all the characters (yup, my interpretation), the drive to live their dreams. Yet, so many of them have locked away this drive. Only Jack remains liberated- even Renee becomes caged within modelling.

The characters Jack encounters are all trapped in one way or another. The models he associates with are looking to escape the industry, just wanting to make a quick buck or two before they leave. But it is obvious they have been caught up in the moment for too long, unable to leave. A banker he meets utters Jack's oft encountered statement: "I'll do this a bit longer. Make a million. Get out."

Tiger explores the notion of trapped beauty- the tiger within the zoo, the greenage within grey and wintery Tokyo, love despite it's impending doom, the desire to dream within the cold grips of reality. It is a story of a brief but affecting love depicting the ultimate loneliness that underscores the modelling industry.

This film really grows in loveliness with each watch. It's the kind of film I would have like to watch straight after reading Haruki Murakami's works. Hahaha.

Random observation: It's super good not to hear an over exaggerated Australian accent (the ones that please foreigners) like those of certain Aussie actors who have made it big. We actually speak quite normally. Thanks James McFay for being Australian and not ORRR STRAHHH YAHHN. yeah sorry, my phonetics suck.

It's that time of year again where I head off to band camp. And right on cue you just thought of American Pie, am I right? Eh, well our band camp is the epitome of innocence. The most exciting thing that happened last time was when I got a rash on my hand from playing volleyball on wet grass.

I don't know whether I'm excited or ...not excited about this camp. I've been so indifferent to a lot lately. Being indifferent sucks. I was looking forward to chilling this weekend by watching Tiger, a film by James McFay. James generously offered to send me a copy to review and I felt guilty for accepting because it would seem like I'm just plugging some freebie. But I actually saw the trailer earlier this year and was intrigued then- um Tokyo, fashion, models, messed up love- film makers, those are my weakspots! Anyway, since I'm leaving for band camp, I'll have to delay my plans to watch it. Just wanted to show you guys how loverrrrrly the painterly cover is (who did it?). I finally realize how people achieve that kind of look in illustration...I'm going to try it soon.
Also below are scans from an oldish copy of VOGUE Paris. I was going through my stack of mags not out of boredom but as a way to say goodbye to fashion for 3 days. Hahaha. It's such an amazing issue and has been "tumblrized" kajillions of times but I don't really care. Tao as Tina Chow, Liza Minelli, Sasha as Liza Minelli, Raquel as Debbie Harry and Grace Coddington! Your eyes will thank me for it.
Last picture is of Aimee's Holga which she lent to me some time ago. She literally handed it to me and said something like "here, use it, get it out of your system and never look at it again.". I took some shots with it today but because there is no viewfinder, I wasn't sure whether I was taking photos of people's faces or ...chests... Awkward.

Reading habits

When you read a fashion magazine, do you flip to the fashion editorials first? Is that the point of fashion magazines?
I feel like most people do that. It's easier to find a scan of an editorial online than a scan of an article. Is this a matter of articles being badly written or that the content is disengaging? Or should fashion magazines serve only as a visual feast? Ultimately, when it comes to fashion mags, do you care more about the shoots than articles?

I'm the type who reads magazines from beginning to end. Every profile, interview, review and editorial, I will read in order. Just as how I would read a book. So yeah, I do put myself through some real stinkers when it comes to articles but there will always be the amazing piece too.
Of course it depends on the magazine but sometimes after reading a stack of fashion mags, all the articles seem to be the same sort of PR rehash. Which is totally fine in that there's nothing wrong with using press releases to help write a piece but I'd like an article about a designer not to sound like a praised filled PR email. I don't know. Is that just the conventional way of writing about fashion? Praise the designer, state their inspiration, throw in some reference to the rare breed of chic women it caters for...
Hell, I've written like that. And I'm sure it made people snore.
I guess I've come to realise I want more than just praise and a string of pop culture references from the designer- aka the "I was inspired by...". I want insight and philosophy and stages of production and struggles and the designer's views on not just their own clothes but other things in the realm of fashion (sorry designers, I want a lot from you hahhaa). And most of all, I want the writer to be honest and review the clothing.
I prefer interviews to write ups. Frank and open conversation is the best. Altogether I think magazines need to break the fashion write up conventions to make things more interesting. Articles should be just as important as the fashion editorials- otherwise, just cut out the words.

You know what's really weird? Looking at someone you've seen around since forever but have never bothered/gotten a chance to talk to then realising they are a human being, not just another figure standing in the hallway and they are shockingly beautiful in the most non superficial way possible. And realising this all with only a 5 word phrase aimed in their direction. Yeah. The creepy part is when you get home and draw them then multiply their face in photoshop because you have been so devoid of inspiration lately. Beware people, this is how I get my inspiration.

Lately I've been wanting to live in this bat wing hoodie. I never remember who it's by and it seriously doesn't help that the tag has no name, just a really cool graphic. I do remember buying it at Comeback Kid and trying it on in their massive change room. It's a size M in mens but I bought it anyway. I think the interior of Comeback Kid sucked me in too. Well spaced out racks, high ceilings, white warehouse style walls, polished wooden floors, lofty atmosphere. Is that not the quintessential studio like place we can only dream of living in? OH WAIT this has turned into some kind of an ad. Well, I genuinely wish I lived there anyway.
I pretty much wore this outfit the entire weekend. I've been sucked dry of inspiration to dress like anything other than No Face. Aimee and I went out location scouting which is no fun in 15 degree weather. I suppose the smart thing to do would have been to wear my puffy China jacket but even if the wind is howling and the rain is pouring, I can't bring myself to put that ugly piece of plastic on...not in Melbourne anyway. I get mistaken for a fob enough already.

Exams are finally over and holidays begin in 2 weeks. Yay to that!
Apologies for not posting in so long. I had a few things I wanted to post about but I've been so preoccupied the topics slipped out of my head...Anyhoo, I will continue on with some random catch up messages.

I'd just like to say to all the people who volunteered to help me out on my I HEART FILM project for media: I haven't forgotten about you! Now that school has begun to slow down and holidays are approaching I will be emailing you guys shortly to set up proper meeting/skypeing times. I realise it's super rude to leave you hanging for like...2 months. And for that I truly am sorry. But now that I have the time, I'm super pumped to restart the project!

Also I was kindly invited to the Nutrimetrics screening of Sex and the city 2 last week which I dragged Aimee along to. Actually I didn't drag her, she was surprisingly excited to see it. Ran into Fashion Hayley and her sister Ebony there too which made us feel less weird as we were probably the only young ones in the crowd of middle aged women.
In all honesty I wasn't expecting much from the movie. I absolutely hated the first one but after recently watching a few episodes from the series, I thought I'd give it a shot. And I figured if all else fails, there would always be the pretty clothes to gawk at. Turns out the second installment was much more enjoyable than the first. And it made me laugh quite a bit (although there were many *cringe* moments too. All in all the Laughs to cringe ratio was something like 3:2 so I suppose it wasn't too bad). The whole middle east 'learning about Islam' thing involving Carrie and crew oggling at burkas etc and then finding the underground club of courageous independent Muslim women with designer clothing hidden beneath their burkas rebelling against the men who repress them etc and the whole unabashedly American generalisation of their culture made me roll my eyes. But aside from that, good times! good clothes!
After seeing it, I read vogue's review which I think is pretty accurate.

Anyway, it looks rather like a futuristic ear piece. Which is super cool. Also it reminds me of a stage in my childhood, when everybody went through a Cosimo Devito one earring phase. I didn't have my ears pierced at the time (still don't) so hankered after these dramatic chain curtain non earrings from Sportsgirl which draped around the outset of the ear to create the illusion of wearing an earring. Estelle's creation is more of an alien type earpiece than an earring though. Either way, I'm just really glad to see a non-earring again.

So first off I will apologise for being relatively absent from the online community lately. Reasons are the same as always- school, school, music, school...

Anyway, just wanted to share something quickly, you know, throw my thoughts out there before I go back to fretting over school.

I was thinking about increasing prevalence nudity/partial nudity in fashion magazines and basically in pop culture lately. I've seen so many boobs, nipples, vajajays and bums of late I came to the conclusion that if some girl walked down the street topless I'd be totally fine and at ease with it. Like, seeing topless girls feels so...normal for me. Not so much pubic hair and vaginas though.
I guess I'm desensitized because magazines think fashion editorials seem incomplete without at least one nipple and god knows how many hours I've spent on sites like fashionising.com looking at various mag scans. Seeing boobs and stuff shouldn't feel weird in the first place seeing as I'm a girl and see that everyday but anyway, that's not the point. I just think we're transitioning into this time where everybody is going to feel less irksome and "OH MY GAWD MY EYES" about nudity and well, hopefully more comfortable with seeing naked bodies. There's nothing wrong with nudity. With that being said, I still feel angry over senseless nudity though. And like, senseless/needless "fuck me" type poses/photos in fashion editorials. On a different note again, I'm just skipping from point to point here (it's late and I'm incoherent), I also don't want to see parents shielding their kids eyes when there is nudity in a movie. haha what am I saying? I guess I just want people to be okay with nudity and not all childish and "eeewww that's gross" and maybe becoming desensitized to nudity is in some ways a good way to achieve this?
Urgh, this is so incoherent. I give up because I no longer know what the point of this post is. I will leave this to the comment box and my head when it is functioning at it's best.

I was moping about over my broken cheapo sunglasses from Rubi so my dad very kindly handed to me his old Lacoste frames- "Take very very good care of these. I have worn/loved them for at least 20 years". I think it's best if I don't show him what happened to the Rubi ones...

Since the Lacoste sunglasses managed to age so well, I thought I'd pull the vain grandma look, complete with bright pink lipstick. I haven't managed to wear this lovely scarf Sportsgirl kindly sent me a while ago...I suppose this is a start.

RAFW gives LMFF self esteem issues

[Note this post was supposed to be published 4 days ago but everytime I pressed "publish post" my internet cut out and didn't return till 2 hours later...when I was busy doing something else.]

I have downed far too much online RAFW coverage within the past 48 hours it's like I actually attended. Well, no not really. Although I'd like to let the feeling continue so shut up and let me be happy.
Of the many blogs that covered RAFW, Ingrid Kesa's careful goodie bag rating system and reviews really made me feel as if I was there. Check out her blog if you want some not so serious accounts on the week that was. By the way, Nandos peri peri sauce in goodie bags? BAHAHAHA. Like how I'm talking about it as if I was there? As I said before, shut up and let me be happy.
Okay, so before I paste the odd hundred or so saved RAFW pictures into my "fashion" folder and forget about them for half a year, I'd like to discuss a few things that caught my eye.

1)Zimmermann
What. The. Hell.
No.
WHAT. THE. HELL?!
When I was flipping through the collection online I had to literally glance at the name every 5 seconds to make sure I was looking at Zimmermann. Save for the swimsuits, I'd have had no clue it was them. OK, so maybe I never followed their work that closely in the first place but this collection "Vanishing Point" was bucketloads more directional than anything I've ever seen of theirs. I mean, I thought they were all about the bikinis and floaty/ruffly/floral dresses; which is great and all but this new direction that they are presenting: bolder and more graphic prints, and the general one foot in the "girly" and the other in "experimental" door is capital A-mazing.
If there was a winner of RAFW and they were judged upon how many printscreens I took of their collection from Vogue.com.au, Zimmermann would win.

2) Dion Lee
...what is there left to say? Wonder child of Australian fashion he indeed is. After seeing the close up shots on Jak&Jil, I looked up some of Dion Lee's stuff on The New Guard in the naive hope that I'd be able to one day afford one of these pieces. His silk/wool pleated blazer dress sells for close to $2000. Ahem! Not that I doubt it's worth; even just from seeing pictures online the craftsmanship looks immaculate, but I was half hoping that his wears would rest along the $600 mark since most Australian designers are around that...$600 sounds good in my head because it is attainable if I become a social recluse for a year- which I probably will be doing in my last year of VCE anyway so HEY $600 is a totally realistic goal!
Oh, but if I was to buy Dion Lee, I'd have to be a social recluse for 3-4 years. Hmmmm, might have to rethink this plan. Or you know, I'll just go back to scooping ice cream.

The only thing that bugs me though, is that this collection kept prompting me to think back to Josh Goot, Christopher Kane, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll and basically young London designers. I think it must be the silhouette, the detailing...definitely the digital prints which was everywhere on London catwalks.
This is not a bad thing- Dion Lee certainly has his own direction and viewpoint and I still think his clothing is amazing. He wouldn't be out of place showing at London Fashion Week don't you think?

3) Romance Was Born
Experiencing the show, in it's full glory with the music, lighting and set design must have been spectacular. I really love that they go all out with their RAFW presentations. And I'm semi pissed that my first experience of seeing their designs on the catwalk was at LMFF which presents all designers clothing in the most sensible way possible (it [LMFF] is a consumer based fashion festival though so I guess you have to tame things a little so as not to frighten/shock consumers too much). I enjoy looking at their work the most when they've gone bat shit crazy. Hence the selection of looks below. Some of the simpler outfits at the start were a tad boring. They wouldn't actually be boring sitting on a rack in store, but on the runway they looked tame especially when out came the wild one off type pieces that followed. I think the environment in which the clothes are presented in matters...a lot.

4) Konstantina Mittas
Not much caught my eye aside from this dress which is for lack of a better word, AMAZEBALLS. What is the origin of that word btw? I have not been able to get it out of my head for the past week. Not sure what material this is but it looks a bit like crinkled cellophane through my moniter and I am loving it. The colour and flouncy shape just makes me so happy too! The rest of the collection was dramatic and shapely and gravity defying and whatnot but it didn't resonate with me. I felt like it was being shapely and dramatic for the sake of being shapely and dramatic. This could be due to seeing it through a laptop screen and not in the flesh/3D though. Not sure.

5) Christopher Esber
This collection was probably one of the most gratifying to zoom up into on Vogue.com.au. Upon seeing those razor sharp leather skirts, most people probably thought of Celine. I know I did. But aside from the minimal vision that is "SO HOT RIGHT NOW", the details on the blue skirt and sheer shirts captured my attention. The skirt is quite possibly the most beautiful thing on earth, along with Dion Lee's blue interlocking pleat dress. What's with me and blue pleats hm?

6) Carly Hunter
I'm sad that Carly's show didn't get coverage on mainstream media; and by that I mean WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU SEND LUCAS DAWSON TO HER SHOW, VOGUE.COM.AU?
Anyway, Carly's clothing is the type of clothing I could wear on a day to day basis. Perfectly functional but INTERESTING. That's exactly what Limedrop does so well too.

7) Birthday Suit

Thank goodness The Grand Social Blog attended and posted these snapshots. Birthday Suit are a burgeoning label I've been trying to keep tabs on since I saw their "ridonk" (Girlfriend magazine uses this word too much. Also, they need to stop shortening because to coz. I know they are a teen magazine and all but an article is an article and coz is not because's sufficient replacement) catsuits. I didn't even see the whole collection but judging from these pictures it all looks like somebody took a trip to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. FUN FUN FUN.

No sooner did I buy these booties then did I felt iffy about them. Not that there is anything actually wrong with them. But on the two occasions on which I wore them out, I felt excruciatingly...TRY HARD INDIE. That is one of the worst feelings ever, because the slightly perverted bitch of a voice in your head tells you "HAH see that girl over there with the lovely booty encased in black high waisted jeans? Mhm mhmmmm. Now that's how you wear ankle boots!" . And then the other voice in your head is like "Oh who are you kidding with your little leather lace-ups? I sprinted non stop for 20 minutes straight the other day. I just felt like being a kid again and pounding down the streets for no particular reason. It was a pretty fruitful run actually- aside from releasing the endorphins and fulfilling part of the recommended daily exercise quota for young adults, it struck me that I need to say thanks to all the internet peeps who I've met/emailed extensively since the inception of this blog. You guys know who you are. Sometimes I can't believe I've actually gone out and met these "strangers" from the interwebs...But I've enjoyed meeting with every one of you. As cheesy as it sounds, I learned a lot from you guys and a lot about myself. AWWWWW. *TEAR*. Oh yeah, and I think the only reason my social skills aren't completely fucked is because I basically met with strangers through this blog.
I feel like I've posted about "life" enough now. Back to muh fashion discussions yah?

I remember when I found this black and white picture of my mother smoking. I thought it was the most amazing thing on the planet. It [the picture] is amazing; lets not get into any lengthy discussions because yes it [smoking] is bad and "an expensive way to die" and yes I promise you I won't smoke, mum/dad/brother/old friend and I really don't mind if you smoke but tell me not to do the same. But anyway, smoking looks good in photos. Um, there's no point to this story aside from black and white automatically makes everybody look 50 billion times more attractive. FACT. Not that I'm calling my parents unattractive...they're already so pretty b&w makes the look supersonic [...lame emma...lame]. But as the great Aimee once said upon seeing a Connex advert featuring their own staff "Wow, the Connex staff are so fugly they had to shoot in black and white".

Along with this photo, I also saw photos of my dad from "back in the day". It made me think back to the first issue of Russh I ever purchased. It had an article stating (with scientific evidence) that girls are attracted to boys/men that share similar features to their dad. That article freaked me out for ages...I may have lost sleep over it. (Although that may have in part been due to seeing an old photo of my dad with a six pack. ewwwwwwwwwwwOH GOD LIFE HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME). And consequently, for the longest time, I consciously reminded myself not to develop crushes on guys who I thought looked similar to my dad. I can't tell you whether this theory is actually correct based on my own experience because I sometimes erase my own memories when it comes to this stuff (hey it has worked...). If anyone doesn't mind possibly freaking themselves or their boyfriend out I'd really like to hear what you think about this theory.

I caved and bought a pair of granny boots from etsy, you know, 5 years or so after they've become "hot". Oh well, they were [sort of] necessary to buy. My old clunky Docs are so heavy; I'm sick of dragging my feet around in them. Plus I've kicked myself in the ankle numerous times while wearing those Docs (they are not the classic ones with yellow stitching. They are somewhat chunkier and have a thick heel). It is not a pleasant feeling. So OBVIOUSLY I bought these $40.00 babies for health reasons. Hrmmm. That and my plan to buy nice boots on zipia.net failed because it turns out it's a "wholesale" website where you have to spend over $300 USD to actually buy anything.

It's getting so cold I feel as if my insides are recoiling. If I had a certain appendage it no doubt would have retracted into my body right now, like Chandler Bing's does when he hears Janice laugh. When it gets cold and dark outside I can't help but feel lonely and empty (both of which I know I am not)...just like the cliche used in movies. But hey, cliches are cliches because there is a certain amount of truth to them, right? I remember feeling intensely "lonely" during winter for the past three years (a time in which an insurmountable amount of hormones were coursing through my veins), as if I needed some guy to be by my side. Jeezus. As I get older and those around me get into relationships the topic of love, or at the very least, lust has become somewhat of a regular conversation starter. It's times like those when I hang back and say very little aside from the occasional stupid joke. Because I've never experienced that kind of stuff before. And sometimes, just sometimes, I feel like I am falling behind on the teenage zeitgeist and consider actively looking for guys. Which is like, something I'm pretty against because I'm one of those "go with the flow" people when it comes to boys. And then I thought some more and realised the whole "go with the flow" attitude has basically been perpetuated by a diet of Hollywood romances where love/relationships just "happen" and everything works out like a mofo Tayler Swift fairytale with some slight malfunctions. Which sucks because things like that don't actually happen and means I have to actually be somewhat proactive with boys and whatnot.
But then I said to myself, "screw it". I have to just do what I have to do while I'm young and if love or any of that shizz comes up then good, but I won't start worrying until I'm 30 and really alone.
These thoughts actually sprung up in my head from lack of sleep after watching a few dozen amazing French movies in which love conquered all [but in a non clichey way- yay!]. So yes, maybe I am only going slightly insane because of that.
I don't know the meaning of this post. Just a diaryish entry I can look back on when I'm 40 and cackle at. Now I need to go do homework. I need to focus on my current life project. I need 10 grand. I need to make it and write about people, places, things, anything and everything for the rest of my life. I also need to stop secretly getting so angry when people tell me that all they want is fame and fortune because if it is their dream they are entitled it. The end.

And every once in a while, I want to dress like Tokyo Boys because they are fineeeee. Or maybe they are fineeeeee because they dress so well. I don't know. In any case, this guy gets bonus points because he reminds me of Joseph Gorden Levitt.

I was about to start this post with "I haven't been wearing much lately" but my pinky realised how wrong that sounded and reached for the backspace key instantly. What I actually intended to say was that I haven't been wearing much interesting stuff lately. HELLO OUTFIT RUT. I've not managed to part with my Zara denim leggings [they are brilliant and not disgusting because they look like normal skinny jeans] and trusty 3 strap flats. Earlier this week I purged my wardrobe of ill fitting clothes and clothes I never touch anymore, so basically I'm left only with the stuff I bought in China. I realised the rest of my closet space was occupied by either 80's garb from my mum's wardrobe, childhood crap or Retrostar sale finds with holes in them. Man, one of these days I have to actually save up to buy decent stuff.

When I took this picture, I was standing next to the blackened frame of a car that had been set alight. I haven't been back to this site in about a year. I used to go bike riding there a lot and as a kid I crossed the creek there, slipping on the rocks and soaking my shoes in the muddy water. It always smelled like salt and urine under that bridge and I remember sprinting under it as fast as I could when the sun had set and I was due back home for dinner. I wonder whether kids still go yabbying there.

The art of knotting is a complex one. Personally I can do 2 types of knots, the quick release knot and the standard double knot. Now I really want to learn the Karla Spectic knot, which turns the most boring of jumpers and dresses into conversation starters. I've never liked Karla Spectic until now, a period of time in which I feel I am gravitating towards simpler things (don't ask why). Don't worry, I still like crazy shit though. But this collection is just too sweet and lovely to not adore, and it seems Karla's perfected that soft severity she is known for.
I love the colours in this collection, as well as all those knots and drapes- it's all rather angelic yet cheeky. A bit like the super nice girl in class who lends everybody her crayons but goes to boisterous parties with her older sister at night.

She has also collaborated with Caitlin Shearer, who did the Pocketto Issue 7 cover, resulting in extremely pretty and romantic silk pieces.

I found an undeveloped roll of film in my room a few weeks ago and seriously couldn't remember when I had used it up. So I took it to get developed and got the results back on Saturday. Do you know what was on there?
PICTURES OF SHOPPING TROLLEYS. Let me reiterate. PICTURES OF SHOPPING TROLLEYS [this is where you LOL or ROFL]. And then the memories all came flooding back to me. It was on a boring afternoon last year when I had taken the camera out for a spin around my neighbourhood. Somewhere along the way I thought shopping trolleys dumped in and around the creek would make an interesting subject (which, looking at the results it actually kind of did), so I went on the lookout for them. I remember feeling super inspired that day. The good thing is, the trolley photos now come in handy for my media project (woo, hi-5 2009 version of myself!).

The first, third and fourth photos below are from that same roll of film and have nothing to do with the trolleys. I'd just like to point out I have always been in love with darkness, windows and lights. And also that I miss walking around in the city at night. I used to get such a kick out of it and despite Melbourne's streets being quite dead at times, it still felt very romantic to me. That is all.

When I saw Comme des garcons fall 2010 I instantly thought of Resident Evil 4. I am not kidding. I'm not even a gaming nerd (I swear, I swear *holds palms up*) who likens everything to COD/Warcraft/Prince of Persia [ while we're on this subject, teenage boys, you have got to stop talking about COD. PLEASE.]
While this collection is a throwback to the infamous Lumps and Bumps collection, I immediately drew parallels to the Resident Evil parasite that lurks within disfigured (and very breathy- RE4 players should know what I am referring to) monsters. Upon seeing the cushioned bumps, I remembered back to the parasites that pulse and shake in the RE4 monster. I can almost imagine the bulbous cysts on this coat pulsating in the same manner, like giant wiggling maggots. But, you know, CDG makes these horrible things so poetic...

I wish I would find a more accurate screen shot to illustrate the similarity...but this is the best I've got. In the game, you can zoom in with an infra red lens to see the parasites in it's body. You can't see them in this picture though...

Here's the very delayed post with my YEN runway snaps. There are a billion better images out on the net and I technically shouldn't be bothering you with less that satisfactory shots with black bobs skewing the view so I'll keep it short with a selection of my favourite bits from the show. ALPHA 60's short film: It's the kind of quote that people would leap to post on their facebook/myspace page, but somehow much less cheesy and a whole lot more heartfelt.

NOM*D Their film featured a girl drawing fishnets on herself. At first I thought she was attacking herself with an emo tool...she seemed to be so angsty running the permo down her thigh...but then I realised it was a lot less morbid. Actually, I'd be interested in finding out the concepts behind that film. It felt like it had multiple layers of meaning...
What animal is she holding here? I forgot. A lamb? A sacrificial lamb perhaps? How do I get my hands on this little fashion film?

I think everybody swooned when the cloud print blazer came out. I love it too; makes me want to be swept up by the wind and dropped amongst those cotton balls.

Butt clenching

Only now have my calves fully recovered from the two consecutive nights in which I wore wedges to LMFF. How do you stiletto wearers do it? I know it tightens your butt, thighs and calves but 2 nights in wedges and I've had all the butt clenching, thigh toning, calf stretching I'd like to have experienced in my entire lifetime. The aftermath was even more painful than that time we ran cross country in P.E. I mean, if teachers really want to give kids a work out, just make them run 100m in heels; there, childhood obesity sorted.

Interlude

I got some rolls of film developed FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE and yes it was a joyous occasion because I had no idea how they were going to turn out and when I opened the envelope and saw colour, this euphoria just came over me. I had a freakish feeling while walking up to Camera House that they'd all turn out black because...because god knows what can happen when you don't know how to properly load film/control exposure etc etc. BUT, it all turned out good, there were some horrendous shots but for the most part I'm happy with my venture. These were taken a few hours after Melbourne experienced the nightmarish hail stones.

First of all, thank you to everyone who still reads this blog. It seems I've become a patchy/sporadic poster despite how hard I try to be one of those regular bloggers you can count on for daily content. I also fall into the "I'm so sorry I haven't been posting" blogger category. Sorry for that too >.<

chronicles of never sale

It's become a bad habit of mine to attend nearly every vaguely independent designer sale that pops up on the radar. I've only ever bought something from those said sales twice because I am in a state of perpetual frugality when it comes to moolah, yes go ahead and make a joke about it being in my asian blood; I don't mind. But I am in no state to break this habit, or indeed even try to, so YALL SHOULD ALL COME TO THE CHRONICLES OF NEVER SALE with me even if you are in a similar financial situtation. I'm using these words that make me sound like I usually have a stable income or something. It's kinda pretentious. Can't help it. Anyway, it's Chronicles of Never, guys! Moody, dramatic, black, draping, streetwear, yet comfortable and wearable etcetc. I go to these local labels' sales because they create interesting clothes and even if I don't buy nearly any of it, my eyes need to regularly soak in experimental stuff. Plus sale prices of these kinds of labels are often like full price of higher chain stores (Country Road, Witchery etc) except the designs are way more interesting!
